In 53 BC, Marcus Licinius Crassus led one of the Roman Republic’s most powerful armies into Mesopotamia, hoping to conquer Parthia and rival the military glory of Caesar and Pompey.

The campaign ended in disaster. At Carrhae, the Roman legions faced Surena, a brilliant Parthian commander whose cavalry combined extraordinary mobility with the devastating power of mounted archers. What followed became one of the most famous defeats in Roman military history.
